Species we most commonly cut

Different species need different treatment — and different timing.

• Beech and hornbeam — once a year in late summer for best shape
• Yew (Taxus baccata) — very tolerant, can be cut hard if needed
• Box (Buxus sempervirens) — light, frequent trims for formal shape
• Privet — 2 cuts a year for a proper formal finish
• Laurel — pruned with secateurs rather than hedge trimmer for a clean finish (no shredded leaves)
• Leyland cypress, Lawson cypress — annual trim, never cut into old brown wood
• Escallonia, viburnum, hawthorn — informal cuts to shape

Restoration cuts on overgrown hedges

A one-off restoration cut brings an out-of-shape hedge back to a manageable profile. On tolerant species (yew, hawthorn, beech, hornbeam, laurel) hedges can be cut back hard into old wood and will re-green from within. On non-tolerant species (Leyland, Lawson, most conifers) the limits of what can be cut are strict — we'll tell you honestly what's recoverable and what isn't before any blade goes in.

Tall, long and commercial hedges

Beyond a normal domestic hedge, we bring larger kit: pole trimmers to reach 4–5m without ladders, tow-behind chippers to process brash on site, and — where genuinely needed — platform or mobile access for very tall runs. Commercial and estate work is typically scheduled annually or twice yearly with a fixed price.

Wildlife, timing and the law

It's an offence under the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 to disturb an active nest. We check every hedge for nesting activity before starting, especially during the March–August season, and defer or adjust the works where necessary. Restoration cuts are always planned outside nesting season on most species.
